Planning: Mood board for music video

I have created a mood board on Microsoft PowerPoint to give a general impression and feel to the video, on this board i have selected images which relate to our video and show the themes we will be presenting in it, i have also annotated the images to make it clearer for someone that see's the board. As you can tell from the mood board it is quite a depressing dark video. The story revolves around a break up and the ratist is telling the story of this by writing lyrics and singing the song.

Video Animatic

This is our video animatic. We firstly planned out a story board, which will help us plan our video. We drew pictures and wrote what would happen in each frame and what camera angle we would use. We then took pictures of the story board and uploaded them onto final cut express.

Target Audience Research: Analysis of past students digipaks

this digipak was created by a group of media students from North London. It is an excellent example of a digipak as they are presenting themselves as a girl band and i think the digipak makes them look very professional and current. Although we are creating a six panel digipak we can use this to set an example for us. The digipak refers back to the music video. On the front cover we are shown each member of the band individually like a real girl band would do. They have used a girly font and color which would reach out to the target audience.
As you can tell the video and the digipak work well with one another. You can clearly see a still image from the video on the digipak which is of the shoes. I hope that we will be able to take a still image from our video as it will work really well on the digipak and will give the target audience a taste of what to expect in the video.

Real Digipak analysis

As we are creating a digipak for our song I'm Sorry by Amanda Lucas i thought it would be best to research other artists digipaks. Digipaks bring the whole item together and enables in to be sold in shops like HMV.
We had to ask the question "what goes on a digipak?"
WHAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED ON A DIGIPAK

  • Font
  • Spine
  • Front Back
  • Membership postcard/flier
  • lyrics section
  • disk impression
  • track listing
  • image
I looked and Albert Hammond Jr's album "Yours to keep", as a example as it is very unique and stands out from others on the shelf.

This is the front three panels of the album. This image continues over all three panels which gives a sense of continuity and professionalism. This digipak sums up the bands music it is care free and relaxing. When first looking at the image you think it is childish, mellow, fantasy-like, very naturistic and relaxed. The image is of a very nauristic scene of animals playing in a lake area.
The font is very interesting, it looks like handwriting which runs well alongside the theme of the digipak as the images all look hand drawn.

This is the inside three panels, we get the same theme running through the inside which is a scene from nature. Again we initially think the same things when looking at it, calm and relaxing. Although on this image we are introduced to the band.

This is the actual CD, this also is very similar to the digipak. Here we are presented with the artist name which is in the same handwritten font that is present on the front. We also see a sunrise image like on the inside of the digipak and the three rabbits which are on the front.

Jason Derulo Digipak
This is the front cover of Jason Derulo's new album Future History. Jason Derulo is very famous for his dancing and so we are shown a picture of him dancing on his front cover. The name of the album is future history and this album cover is quite futuristic as it has taken a photograph in a futuristic pose and edited it to make it look supernatural. Also the coloring is quite futuristic as it is not an ordinary light. The fact that the background is quite dark makes the text stand out.

This is the back of Jason Derulos album, it is similar to the front as it is a picture of him in front of a background. This picture of the artist echoes the name of the album, it is like he is looking into the future. The song list is on the back and there is a unique light on it that is also present on the front. The text on the spine is the same as the front so that shows their is continuity on this product.

This is the CD inside the digipak, this is quite different to the front and back covers, however the continuity is still there through the use of text that Jason Derulo is written in. Their is also a track-list on the CD as well as the back cover.

Preliminary Music Video

This is our preliminary music video task. To form this video we had to get two actresses Naima and Jenna to take the roles of Elton John and Keekee Dee. The pair had to learn the words of the song but also try and lip sync in time to the original track, they also had to perform the song and try to rein act the facial expressions and movements that will make the song more realistic. We then had a tricky job at editing the video as we had to try and match the song and lip syncing together. We then added interesting editing to try and make the video more professional. This video was taken to refresh our skills in filming and editing.
This is the lyrics to the song our actresses had to learn.

Organisation:vLocations and props in our video

We have finally decided what locations and props we will use in our music video after discussing the conventions of the genre. To reach our target audience which is teenage girls we will use every day items that they can relate to. This song is about heartbreak and doing something wrong which is teenage girls favorite topic, so we will set it in a place they can relate to and try and make it as realistic as possible.

props

Locations

We will have one of our scenes set by a lake, it will be isolated and she will be looking into the distance to show her loneliness.

Another scene will be set in a park the girl will be swinging alone to show her loneliness, and she should be enjoying it but she wont be.

One of the scenes our actress will be walking through long grass to show she is lost and cant find her way out, it will also look effective.

another scene will be set in her bedroom as that is where most teenage girls go to cry.

Outline Ideas

Amanda Lucas' song is called I'm sorry. We felt after all of our research that the song fits best to teenage girls, and teenage girls are very into love and boys. So we decided that we should create a situation that the girl is reminiscing over her ex boyfriend who she has mistreated, the girl is thinking about all of the good times she has had with him and therefore we are focusing the song mainly around the line "i'm sorry. The video will be very emotional and we will have many close ups of the girl singing with very obvious emotional expressions. Then after we will see how the relationship went wrong which is because she cheated on him, and we will see the bad stages the couple went through together. The video will have a strong country theme much like the videos of Taylor Swift and some will be themed in a park and the girl will be singing and playing the guitar.
this is just the outline of the ideas we will soon create a story board and animatic which will help bring our video to life.

Initial research and target audience

Ib order to create our video we would have to decide who the target audience is that we are reaching out to. Me and my group will have to participate in activities which will ask questions to an audience to help us reach out to the correct audience. We will hold focus groups in which we will play our song to a group of all ages and then ask them questions about who the song will appeal to most and what type of video should run alongside it. We will then complete a survey on survey monkey where we will ask questions and see which gets the most votes.

Focus group
Above os a video of the focus group we held, this also gave us practice of filming and editing to help us in our music video.

What I learned from the focus group

We held a focus group to help us see what teenagers our age wanted to see in a music video. We also asked them questions such as; do you like the song?, who does it remind you of? etc. We filmed teh video which should be shown below.

What i learned from the focus group. I learned that girls of the age between 15-18  really liked the song we have chosen to create a music video for. They found the song soulful and relateable, which is good as it reaches out to teenage girls as a audience which is a wider range than just "indie girls" as we thoughtt it would. They said the song was very emotional which means we will have to create a music video which will have heartfelt performances in. The themes in this song was "depression" sadness forgiveness and love. These themes are very much downbeat so we will have to try and lighten the mood of the video a bit without taking away from the emotional song.

The girls in the focus group said that the song reminded them of artists such as Adele and Kelly Clarkson.

Note to improve: relate the music video to  boys aswell
idea: Involve a boy in  the msuic video so they can show how boys relate to breakups aswell.

Inspiration

This is Shontelle's video T Shirt, we have taken some inspiration from this when thinking about how we will produce our music video. As our song is quite country/pop and slow we will have our actress/dancer laying on the bed and moving whilst singing the song in a certain emotional state. We will also have her walking through the park seeing as it is quite a country song.

The image below is a scene from Taylor Swifts video "Teardrops on my guitar". Taylor Swift is much like our artist Amanda Lucas as they are both country singers. It will also be quite a similar video as we are envisaging a school girl who is missing a certain someone, much like Taylor Swift in this video. We are yet to decide if we will film a school scene yet.

Lyrics to our chosen song - Sorry by Amanda Lucas

These are the official lyrics to Amanda Lucas's song given by amanda lucas herself.

I've never been one for apologies
You know for me, they never came easy
But I'm, I'm gonna take full responsibility
For everything that happened between you and me now

I've had some time now that I'm here on my own
To see things clearly, to see what I did wrong
And I'm, I'm sorry that it took so long
For me to realize that you're where I belong now

So many words I've been dying to say
So many feelings that get in the way
So many times I've pushed off all the blame
But not today, you know I

I never meant to hurt you, I know I don't deserve you, I'm sorry
I might have took you for granted, but I can't stand it.
It's killing me inside
All the times that we tried and all the tears that we cried
Just know that I'm sorry, can you forgive me?

Why are thoughts of you all I can find?
Repeating scenes of memories, that explode in my mind
And I, I wish that we could just rewind
Back to when I was yours and you were mine

So many words I've been tryin to say
So many feelings that get in the way
So many times I've pushed off all the blame
But not today, you know I

I never meant to hurt you, I know I don't deserve you, I'm sorry
I might have took you for granted, but I can't stand it.
It's killing me inside
All the times that we tried and all the tears that we cried
Just know that I'm sorry, can you forgive me?

Manipulation was my favorite game
Deceitful and selfish is what I became
It's hard to admit but I think you would agree
You're better off without me

I never meant to hurt you, I know I don't deserve you, I'm sorry
I might have took you for granted, but I can't stand it.
It's killing me inside
All the times that we tried and all the tears that we cried
Just know that I'm sorry, can you forgive me?

Final Song For Music Video

This is the song we have chosen for our music video. We found this song on unsigned.com, a site which is full of non copyright music. We will create a music video that will work alongside the song, telling a story to the song.  At first we was unsure whether we would be able to use the music so we thought it was best to ask the artist for her permission.

Amanda Lucas- Artist Information

Amanda Lucas is the Artist we have chosen to produce a music video for. We have chosen her country style song I'm sorry. She was born in Louisville in America. it is said that she became a musician without any family influence, and became a musician through sheer love of the topic. Amanda Lucas loved music all through high school and performed many gigs. Since then she has been a member of several bands: London band Altered; Two Cent Penny; and Bridge 19. Lucas released her first album, titled Half Empty, shortly after and has since put out singles like “Suffocating,” “I’m Sorry,” which is the song were using, " Walkaway,” and “Chance.” Amanda Lucas' music is very country and soulful, she writes about the depressing experience she has had.
