This is LMFAO's party rock. I really like this video as it is very fashionable and unique. It is very popular with my age group. I like the costumes they are wearing. Costumes are very important in music video. I also like the dance routine and this is what made the music video famous as people want to learn the "shuffle".
This video is bruno mars' Lazy Song. I like this video because of the routine. It is a very simple video but with a good idea. This is what has made it so successful, the video has 285858597 on youtube. I would say this is very successful.
This is Johnny Cashes last video, it was created after he discovered he was terminally ill and he died a few months after this video. In this video Johnny Cash looks back at his life as a rock star and when he was in his prime and then the video cuts to him now as a weak frail old man. This video is very sad and much different to many other music videos which are supposed to be eye candy, instead this is a very dark dull music video of a man coming to terms with his death and we are shown images of him playing the piano and sitting in a chair unable to hold his drink steady. But as well as being a sad video it also celebrates this legends career.
Nothing Compares To You- Sinead O connor
This is Sinead O Connor cover video of the song nothing compares to you. This is quite a dull song but this video made Sinead much popular in the public eye due to something extraordinary happening at the end. At first the close up of the artist was not meant to be a large part of the video, but the director was captured by her beauty and emotion. Now and again you see clips from Paris, because at first the video was supposed to be set there, but after filming the close up the director thought that was a better idea but could not bare to waste the thousands they had spent in Paris. The great thing about this video is when the artist begins to cry which is unplanned, this is when the audience sees raw emotion and it is very haunting. Sinead says she starts to cry because she begins to listen to the song and it relates to her dead mother.
Stan-Eminem
This is number 31 in the 100 Greatest videos. This is a post modern video and refers to itself as a text. This is a very effective video as it discusses the current problems of fame which are over obsessive fans. The video tells a story of an obsessive fan which goes to all lengths to contact Eminem. In the end it is his obsession which kills him. This video is a very dark video which matches the lyrics and features a lot of violence. This video was thought to be too controversial but it was the controversy which made it successful.
Britney Spears- Baby One More Time
Britney Spears's video Baby One More Time is one of the most controversial of the era due to the clothing that she is wearing whilst performing this sexual song. Britney is seen dancing sexily in a school uniform and people have debated that this video is pedophiliac. However this video is still extremely popular.
A-HA- Take on me
This is a great example of how a video adds value to a song. This song was released without a video and sunk without a trace. However when being released with this great video the song sold millions and was no.1 in the U.S charts. The video shows a woman in a diner reading a magazine, eventually she gets sucked into the motorsport magazine. This is all done through hand drawn animation which is really effective.
Like a Prayer- Madonna
This is perhaps the most controversial video of all time. However even though it received a lot of criticism this criticism got the video well publicized. This video was banned from top of the pops and lost Madonna a lot of sponsorship. This video involves Madonna kissing a statue which is said to be a saint however people question it to be jesus. The statue then comes to life and Madonna makes love to the man. Their is a lot of religious imagery in the video.
used award from winning short film as a "calling card" to get his foot in the door with the video production company "Factory Films"
began by shooting three very low budget music videos cost about £5,000
This is how the process works:
A commissioner from a record label sends a track to 5-10 directors
the directors then each send a treatment
This stage is unpaid
The director who has submitted the best treatment is then commissioned to make the video
Only then is the director paid
As can be seen for many directors in the business it is a precarious existence where there livelihood is dependent on each commission
Jamie Thraves submitted treatment for his two best videos and each was accepted.
Radiohead- Just (£100,000 budget, shot in three days)
Coldplay- The Scientist (£200,000 budget, shot in three days)
Jamie Thraves
most recent video- Japanese popstars- Song for Lisa
currently videos cost around £20,000
shooting time 2 days
Jamie has used music videos to get him into the film business
Has so far shot three features: The low down, The cry of the owl, Treacle jr
Jamie's Tips
Use the lyrics but don't be too literal
most importantly go with the emotion of the lyrics
Jamie's Music Videos
This is a great music video as it causes us to ask questions and keep watching to find out what is going to happen at the end. We are also left with a cliffhanger.
This video is very successful as it is confusing. Jamie Thraves said he took one line from the song and worked from that. The line was "back to the start". Therefore this video is all filmed backwards. At first we wonder what the man is running from but at the end we are shown that he has had a tragic car crash. This video is very dramatic and has a big car crash scene.

It is worth noting that there has been a massive switch in the importance of youtube from television channels such as MTV who play more tv series than music.
Now most viewing of msuic videos now appears to be online.
