The effects model

The consumption of media text has an effect or influence upon the audience.
Its normally considered that this effect is negative.
Audiences are passive and powerless to prevent the influence.
The power lies with the message of the text (can be forced to agree with something).
The model can be called the Hypodermic Model:
Here the messages in media text are injected into the audience by the powerful media.
The audience is powerless to resist.
Therefore, the media works like a “drug, addicted, doped or duped”.
  • Key evidence for the effects model:The Frankfurt School theorized in the 1920’s and 30’s that the mass media acted to resist and control audiences to the benefit of corporate capitalism and governments.
  •  The Bobo Doll experiment, was a very controversial piece of research that apparently proved that children copy violent behaviour (1961, Albert Bandura).

Unisgned.com/Newgrounds.com music for our music video

I will need music to lip synch to in my video, but the music i will use will need to be non-copyright or music that i have produced myself or by a local band or famous artist who has given me permission to use their music. Most probably i will get music from non-copyright websites such as www.unsigned.com or www.newgrounds.com. I will search these websites to try and find a music video that will give me inspiration to make a video for. I will find a song that i feel i could lipsynch to so it will not be too fast, i will also find a song that i will enjoy and i feel will appeal to a certain audience.

What are the conventions of the music video genre?

  • Dancing
  • Bright colours
  • singing
  • lip synching
  • instruments
  • fast editing
  • straight cuts
  • costumes
  • hair
  • makeup
  • performance

Model of the Media

Text > audience > Institution

The text is the media
audience consume the video
There is a financial transaction between the audience and the institution
the institution distribute exhibit promote and market the text

Music video success criteria

I would like my video to be as successful as possible but first of all i need to know what makes a music video successful. A video is judges as successful depending on the amount of views it gets and if it gets good feedback from critics, also if it helps the single generate more money and receive more publicity. what makes a good video is good reviews in magazines/newspapers/online, increasing sales CDs/Downloads, awards such as MTV Music awards.
We will later look at the 100 greatest music videos, these videos are deemed successful by the media as they have caused controversy but also sales, which have in some cases caused them to become number 1 hits.

Youtube Success
one of the most successful current music videos is Justin Biebers song Baby, this is purely because of Youtube. Youtube is taking over music shows and music channels due to its easy access. Hits, likes and views on Youtube show how a successful a song is.
The video above is Justin Biebers song Baby. This video is the most viewed song on youtube. I believe this song is successful due to Justin Bieber being a teen icon and this video appeals to teenagers due to its setting which is a bowling alley and styling. Justin Biebers dance moves also make the video and people tune into the video to learn them.
Rebecca Blacks song Friday is also deemed one of the worst songs ever made. Although the song is terrible and has awful lyrics its controversy and video has made it extremely successful and made it a lot of money. People have tuned in to see the video that has received much publicity.

The brief for my music video

My task is to create a music "promo" video. It has to have certain specifications such as the length which is that it has to be up to five minutes. I will be working either on my own or in a group up to four people.i will also have to produce a 'digipak' but only the cover for its release on the CD and a magazine advertisement  for the digipak. As well as doing all of this i will also create a critical evaluation in which i will discuss the influences etc. to my work but also analyze the final product.

What do you think the purpose of a music video is ?

To grab the audiences attention and promote the new single and the artist. the better the video the more its shown so more money would be given.
